This article featured Engressia and John Draper prominently, synonymising their names with phreaking. The article also attracted the interest of other soon-to-be phreaks, such as Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs , who went on to found Apple Computer. In the first issue of YIPL, writers included a “shout-out” to all of the phreakers who provided technological information for the newsletter: YIPL believes that education alone cannot affect the System, but education can be an invaluable tool for those willing to use it. Specifically, YIPL will show you why something must be done immediately in regard, of course, to the improper control of the communication in this country by none other than bell telephone company. This article published simple schematic plans of a “black box” used to make free long-distance phone calls, and included a very short parts list that could be used to construct one. At first glance all the colored wires associated with your telephone wiring may seem confusing. Although there is an industry standard for use of the colored conductors, the truth is any two conductors regardless of their color will work as long as the same two are hooked up at each end. Having said that I do recommend that whenever it is possible, stay with the industry standard color code.

Standard Telephone Wiring Color Code. There is a possibility of two color codes that you may find in your home, I will cover both of them but only up to a 4 pair cable which consists of 8 conductors. The cable in your home may consist of only 2 pairs, 3 pairs or may be a 4 pair cable. Even though larger cables are made, it is unlikely that you would find them in your home. Color Code One is the old solid color code. Not used in new installations anymore.

Each pair can be used as a phone line, so in this example you can use this cable for up to four phone lines. The primary color of the conductor is the first color listed, the second color is the tracer. Doing your own telephone wiring Note: I’m not familiar with the phone wiring conventions outside the U. In years gone past, it was the responsibility of the phone company not only to bring phone service to your house but to do the phone wiring within your house as well. This is no longer the case. On the back of phone jacks, there are usually four connections—one red, one green, one black, and one yellow. The red and green “Christmas trees” wires power the first, or primary, line in your home. The black and yellow “bumble bees” wires don’t get used unless a second line is added to your home. Adding a second line to your home is an easy task that even the least experienced do-it-yourselfer can do without costly interference from a telephone technician.

First, let’s look a few scenarios where someone may need a second line in their home: A home office may require a dedicated line for business purposes. You may have children who need their own line so that they stop tying up the main phone line. Many people like having a dedicated number for faxes. Dial-up ISP users may want a dedicated line for their online surfing.

We’ll also go over adding a line to a room that currently doesn’t have a phone jack, so you will be able to pick and choose where you want the second line to be located.

Phreaking is a slang term coined to describe the activity of a culture of people who study, experiment with, or explore telecommunication systems, such as equipment and systems connected to public telephone networks. The term phreak is a sensational spelling of the word freak with the ph-from phone, and may also refer to the use of various audio frequencies to manipulate a phone system.

How to Install a Phone Jack By: Danny Lipford Telephone jacks can be either flush or surface mounted, so be sure to buy a replacement jack that fits your particular setup. Also, never work on a phone line during a thunderstorm, since lightning can travel down the wire causing serious injury. To disconnect the line, find the telephone interface box which is usually mounted on an outside wall where the phone lines runs into your house.

Open the customer access panel and unplug the test jack. On older interface boxes without a test jack, unscrew the terminals and detach the wires, remembering which one went on which terminal. Remove the jack from the wall, noting which colored wires are hooked up to the terminals so you can match them to the new one. While only two wires are required for a phone to work, the cable usually contains four or more to provide for additional lines or in case one line should fail.

These are color coded with red and green normally used for the first line, yellow and black for the second, and blue and white for the third. After removing the wires from the old jack, attach them to the new one. If the stripped ends of the wires appear discolored or brittle, cut off the damaged section and strip the outer insulation around the line back a couple of inches, being careful not to nick the wires.

Jan 2, Just confirming what the others said A single phone line uses one pair, the inside two wires red and green by phone standards. A second line can be run on the outside pair black and yellow also, but it requires a special two-line phone. Most devices nowadays only have the middle two wires connected even. All you need to do is wire up the red and green terminals in your phone box like j-sta’s pic to the red and green terminals on your internal phone jack. Like j-sta said, the DSL signal is on the same pair as your analog phone signal, so you don’t need a second line unless you actually ordered your DSL on a second phone number but you do need filters to keep the DSL signal out of the phones.

If you get a “DSL modem install kit” retail box it’ll usually come with a bunch of filters, or you can buy them at just about any store that sells phone cords now. You can either install a filter on each phone, or you can install a single filter near your box and run the unfiltered output to your DSL modem and the filtered output split off to all your phones.

The downside of that is that your DSL modem will not work in the “phone” jacks if you ever decide to rearrange things.

Radio Guide Magazine – June, by Joe Klinger Every engineer has had to deal with telephone lines at one time or another. If the application is in your studio, you can take your time and make some calls to determine the right equipment to buy and the correct phone line configuration to order. Out on the road it’s a different story. The terms “PBX” and “Key” both refer to hardware that enables several telephones to be connected to a smaller number of telephone lines.

The term “Key” is now used to describe any small system but it was originally used to describe the manual keys or push-buttons on systems like the 1A series Key telephone. Todays “Key” systems are more like small PBXs with programmable features such as distinctive ringing, hunt groups, and automatic line selection. A PBX consists of a switch box and punch block located somewhere in the building where the telephone lines come in.

Special telephones are connected point-to-point back to the PBX switch box. These are not standard telephone wires!

How do I hook up a fax machine to my phone line?

Acoustic telephone ad, The Consolidated Telephone Co. Innocenzo Manzetti first mooted the idea of a “speaking telegraph” or telephone. Use of the “speaking telegraph” and “sound telegraph” monikers would eventually be replaced by the newer, distinct name, “telephone”. Charles Bourseul published an article in the magazine L’Illustration Paris:

Prices are going to vary depending on where you live. I can tell you how much we charge to hook up a gas dryer in our area. Providing you already have a gas shut off valve (which is 3/8″ or 1/2″) connected to a piped gas line directly behind where your dryer sits,(shouldn’t be more than 4 feet away) it would be plus parts to come to your home and hook up your dryer.

My advice here is aimed towards connecting both your existing line Line 1 and your new second line Line 2 on new or existing jacks at the locations of your existing jacks. This will provide you the most flexibility in determining how to use your expanded phone service. This advice is only applicable if your phone cable is normal station cable with two or more pairs of wire. Most people will be able to add a second line to their existing jacks without installing any additional cable.

Two wires one “pair” are needed for most phone line connections. Normal station cable what your phone tech may call “JK” used for residential installations has four wires two “pair”. Single line installations only use one pair, leaving the second pair available for the second line.

How to Hook Up a Phone Line From an Outside Box

How to Wire a Telephone Every home has a phone box, also known as a Network Interface Device, regardless of whether or not the home has an active land line. Simply having this box, however, does not mean that there is working phone service inside the house. It is necessary to run telephone wire from the house to this box in order to have a working phone line. It is completely legal and cost effective to wire a telephone line yourself.

There is no permit or inspection required, as the phone wiring that runs from the box to the house is your property. You can save a great deal of money by wiring a telephone yourself instead of hiring the phone company or an electrician to do it for you.

Share on Facebook When you don’t want to spend the extra money on a second phone line dedicated to a fax machine but need the capability to send and receive faxes, you can use a phone and a fax machine on a single line. The fax machine usually screens calls to see if they are voice calls, then signals you if you need to pick up the phone. However, some fax machines allow you to set a delay to give you time to answer before the fax does. Step 1 Plug your fax machine into the wall phone outlet using a standard phone cable.

Use the “Incoming” port on the fax, or the one with the fax symbol above it. Step 2 Plug your phone into the “Outgoing” port on the fax, which often has a phone symbol above it. Step 3 Plug in your fax machine and turn it on. This tells the fax machine to answer the phone and determine whether the call is a fax or voice call. If it’s a voice call, the fax machine should notify you with a special ring.
